The Company

Arrayit Corporation (OTCBB: ARYC) develops, manufactures and markets life science technologies and integrated systems for the analysis of genetic variation, biological function, and diagnostics. Arrayit offers a product line of approximately 650 tools to 2,500 laboratories worldwide. The company's products include microarrayers, microarray scanners, DNA and protein microarrays, microarray printing, microarray substrates and slides, microarray instruments, amplification and labeling, purification kits, microarray hardware, buffers and solutions, microarray cleanrooms, books and software, CGH microarrays, and microarray platforms.

Arrayit's worldwide business position leverages the company's widely used patented microarray manufacturing platform and revolutionary Variation Identification Platform (VIP™) genotyping technology. Nearly every major research center in the world uses Arrayit products including research laboratories, pharmaceutical companies, universities, biotechnology companies, hospitals, government agencies, and nonprofit research organizations. The company is also involved in the import, export, and distribution of industrial and food grade chemicals for plastics, fertilizers, and green energy applications.

On April 9, 2009, the company formed a new research collaboration with the Parkinson's Institute to discover biomarkers for Parkinson's disease. The collaboration is expected to provide diagnosis of 3,000 patients per year. Business alliances for the early detection of ovarian cancer and with BioSystems International to identify predictors and biomarkers for Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer’s disease, will further boost revenue in the mid-to-long term time frame.

Arrayit recently announced that its microarray-based diagnostic test, VIP™, is ready for manufacture and distribution. A breakthrough screening test using VIP™ will allow clinicians and researchers to test and detect the H1N1 swine flu virus in population wide studies. The VIP screening test is the first of its kind developed for multiple numbers of test subjects, with diagnosis available to patients within hours of testing. Up to 80,000 patients can be screened at a time, making it possible for entire communities and entire countries to quickly identify those infected with the new H1N1 virus.

The Technology

Genes, mRNAs and proteins work in concert in the human body to determine our health. Genes are made of DNA and the DNA blueprint in our cells is inherited from our parents. Each person has variations in their DNA blueprint. Most DNA variations in the DNA code have little or no impact on a person’s health, but certain variations can cause serious diseases such as sickle cell anemia, cystic fibrosis, Parkinson’s Disease, hereditary hearing loss, ovarian cancer and other clinical conditions. Identifying variations in the DNA blueprint is performed using a process known as genotyping. Genotyping allows scientists and doctors to detect disease-causing variations in the DNA code. The challenge in genotyping is to affordably test the DNA from hundreds, thousands, and even millions of patients quickly and easily. Genotyping information is used to make medical decisions, so the genotyping process must also be highly accurate and capable of analyzing every gene in the human body.

Arrayit has developed and patented the world’s finest platform for analyzing DNA, mRNA and protein molecules found in the human body. The Arrayit platform uses a revolutionary device known as a microarray. Arrayit microarrays are glass substrates that contain DNA spots representing all 25,000 genes in the human genome (blueprint). An Arrayit microarray functions like a biological computer chip, rapidly computing information about each gene in the human body. Patient DNA, mRNA or protein molecules are obtained from a tissue sample such as small amount of human blood. The samples are labeled with fluorescent tags and mixed with a microarray to allow binding of each spot on the microarray with fluorescent molecules in the patient sample. Molecular interactions between the microarray spots and patient molecules cause each spot on the microarray to glow with an intensity consistent with the amount of DNA, mRNA or protein present in the sample. High-speed scanning of the fluorescent microarray provides quantitative data for every gene in the human body in about 5 minutes.

Arrayit’s VIP™ microarrays enable the analysis of the DNA from 100,000 patients in one experiment. The industry norm is one experiment per patient. The technology provides a distinct competitive advantage. Arrayit offers a full suite of microarray services including custom DNA and protein microarray manufacturing, consulting, training videos, government purchasing, a microarray electronic library, product catalogs, and more.

The Market

The 2009 swine flu outbreak has raised concerns at the CDC and the World Health Organization (WHO). The CDC and WHO believe that the current outbreak poses a pandemic risk because the H1N1 flu virus contains genetic elements from both the swine and human influenza viruses, allowing direct human-to-human transmission without the need for agricultural contact. The dangerous 2009 strain has little immunity in the human population, resistance to several common anti-viral drugs, and has caused serious illness and death.

A Department of Health and Human Services spokesperson said, "In the event of an emerging pandemic, the CDC-IRR (Influenza Reagent Resource) will serve as a source of reagents for qualified laboratories to provide additional support. During a pandemic, laboratories will play a critical role in detecting and confirming initial cases, characterizing viruses, monitoring the progression of the pandemic, and selecting vaccine strains. Scientists around the world are concerned that the influenza virus could one day mutate and acquire the properties needed to quickly spread between people, resulting in a pandemic."

Arrayit's unique microarray platform allows the design, manufacture and distribution of H1N1 chip technology quickly and inexpensively, owing to the Company's unique and patented contact printing technology, versatile system architecture, and broad customer base. "Our team is able to leverage the most sophisticated and accurate gene testing available on the market today to rapidly and affordably bring this H1N1 flu chip test to market," said Rene Schena, Chief Executive Officer of Arrayit Corporation.

The company’s products and services are used in the life sciences, pharmaceutical, and diagnostics markets, which are estimated at $690 billion in annual revenue. The company anticipates new business of more than $3 million with projected revenues of $7.6 million in 2009 and $46.7 million in 2011. The recent agreement with The Parkinson's Institute illustrates the company's strategic growth plan. The deal is expected to produce approximately 3000 patients per year. The collaboration for hearing loss tests will also be a major contributor to revenue growth in the short term. It is estimated that the equipment division will rapidly grow to a $15.4 million dollar business over a 5 year projected period.
